You Can't Pivot in Private- Why career reinvention accelerates in rooms, not in isolation

Many of us go about a career pivot a certain way.

We sit with the discomfort of outgrowing something, and start imagining what a different professional life might look like. New versions of our résumés, maybe a course between obligations, and slowly begin to feel ready-or at least, ready enough.

And while all of that is important- you can’t think your way into a new identity.

What I'm noticing, both in my own path and my ever-growing circle of fellow job seekers, is that the pivot doesn’t gain traction until it moves out of your head and into action. And the beginning of that action is talking to other professionals who do,or have done what you think you would like to try next.

Your professional identity is co-created

We tend to think of identity as something we carry personally - shaped by our own growth, our own decisions, our own becoming.

But professional identity is relational in ways we often underestimate.

You are not only who you believe yourself to be. You are also who others have repeatedly experienced you as- and that perception carries weight. It opens doors just as easily as it closes them.

If your network knows you as the reliable executor, the team manager, or the fragrance expert, opportunities will continue to reflect that identity back to you- even when you've already grown beyond it.

This is the quiet frustration of a pivot. The internal shift has already happened. The desire is real. But the social positioning hasn't caught up yet.

In her book Working Identity, Herminia Ibarra captures this well: reinvention requires experimenting with "provisional selves" in public, not just in theory. New identities cant just be declared- they are socially validated through repeated exposure in new environments.

The visibility gap

Many professionals attempt to pivot in private. Profile updates, taking courses, and the inner work required to get clarity and confidence. Then they wait, hoping the world will notice the shift.

But without social exposure, very little recalibrates.

Your existing network naturally anchors you to a past version of yourself, because that's the only version it has seen. Repositioning must happen where it can be witnessed, and more importantly, where it can be witnessed by the right people.

If you want to move into a new industry, you have to become visible inside those conversations. If you want to shift to a different part of the value chain, you need to be present where that world actually gathers.

The visibility gap isn't about confidence or readiness. It's about access — and access is a function of where you choose to show up.

Something in the environment has to change. New rooms. New conversations. New people who meet you as the version of yourself you're growing into — not the one you're leaving behind.

Opportunity is engineered through engagement

John Krumboltz introduced the concept of Planned Happenstance: Opportunity expands not through careful planning alone, but through deliberate exposure to varied environments and the people inside them.

A conversation leads to an introduction. An introduction opens a door. A door leads to a project or collaboration that reshapes how someone sees you — and that shift in perception unlocks things planning alone never could.

The professionals who successfully navigate pivots tend to understand something subtle about this. They set themselves up for serendipity. They enter rooms where they aren't yet known. They engage people outside their current world and don't wait until they feel fully ready, because momentum only comes from moving toward what's next — not from waiting until it feels certain.
